Back Text

The Chenango County Courthouse, 5 Court Street, Norwich NY 13815

The Chenango County Courthouse was built in 1837 for the sum of $16,000 of stone obtained from a quarry about four miles south-west of Oxford.  It is situated on the site of the first log cabin built in Norwich and overlooks West Park.

It is an imposing structure, built in the Greek Revival style of architecture, with a portico supported by four massive Corinthian columns.  The front of the building is symmetrical. Above the gable roof is an elaborate cupola, a gold dome (which contains some real gold) and a statue of Lady Justice.

The Court House is among a group of more than 40 buildings which make up The Courthouse District in Norwich.  This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 10, 1975,(#75001178).

Recognition of 175 years of service was celebrated on September 29, 2012.
