Baum, Philip K (history teacher, also spouse of Elaine Austin, class of ‘64)

January 8, 1933 - October 21, 2011

 

Philip K. Baum, 78, of Lancaster [PA], passed away Friday, October 21, 2011 at Fairmount Homes, Ephrata. Born in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of the late Philip L. Baum and Maude E. Wood Baum. He was married to Elaine M. Austin.

 

Philip was a graduate of the University of Albany-SUNY and served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. In his earlier years, he worked as a teacher and later worked as a salesman. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Lancaster. He was a Silver Life Master Bridge player, and played in many groups in the Lancaster area.

 

In addition to his wife, he will be lovingly missed by: 4 children, Patricia wife of Tony Galfano of Carrboro, NC, Robert Baum of Oneonta, NY, David husband of Angela Baum of Smithfield, NC, and Joanna Baum of Clayville, NY; 6 grandchildren; former wife, Elizabeth Currier of Cooperstown, NY;2 sisters; 2 brothers; mother-in-law, Gladys Austin of Norwich, NY.

 

A memorial service will be held from St. Thomas Episcopal Church 301 St. Thomas Rd. Lancaster, PA on Saturday, October 29th at 11 AM. The family will visit with friends from 10:30 to 11 AM at the church on Saturday. Kindly omit flowers. Beach, Ole Edward (band teacher)

January 17, 1930 - September 22, 2004

 

UNADILLA , Ole Edward Beach, after a long illness, this wonderful man went home to be with his Savior Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004.

 

During his lifetime, he touched many lives in many unforgettable ways.  He was a scout master, Civil Air Patrol instructor, model airplane club adviser, Sunday School teacher, choir director, Bible study teacher, elder at the Unadilla Baptist Church and in charge of the call committee at the same church.

 

Ole graduated from Norwich High School and was also a bandsman in the United States Army during the Korean War and served his term of duty in the Southwestern United States.

 

He later graduated from Ithaca College with a master’s degree in music.  But his real love was music and the students he taught.  He followed in his father’s footsteps and continued conducting the Norwich Town Band after his father’s death in the late 1950s, and was a music teacher at several schools across New York state.

 

He began his career in the Finger Lakes Region and finished it at Vestal High School in the Southern Tier.  His success is evident by the number of trophies each school collected during his tenure with them.

 

He is survived by his loving wife, Jeanne, and his six children, Elinor and James Czebiniak of Schenectady, Ada Buhrmaster of Gansvoort, Beverly and Kenneth Taubenfeld of Enosburg Falls, Vt., Joanne Machia of Huntington, Vt., Thomas Beach of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Benjamin Beach of Gainesville, Fla.Ole also has three stepchildren, Pam White of Sidney, Kathy White of Canyon Lake, Texas, and Don White of Brooklyn.

Fry, Melvin D (History teacher)

February 9, 1924 - November 19, 1965

 

Melvin Donald Fry, 41, history and social studies teacher in the New Berlin Central School died. unexpectedly at his home 42 Canasawacta Street [Norwich NY] at about 5 a. m., Friday, Nov. 19, [1965]. Death was due to a heart attack. Mr. Fry was born Feb. 9, 1924 in Binghamton the son of Richard O. and Alice Duncan Fry. In his youth he attended the public schools in Binghamton, the Benjamin Franklin Junior High School, and Binghamton North High School. The family moved to Norwich in 1940 and Mr, Fry was graduated from the Norwich. High School in 1941. He attended Hamilton college for one year prior to entering the armed services during World War II. He served as a sergeant in Radio Intelligence in the Guam (the obit was cut off, we don’t have the rest)
 

Green, Dr. Edward, (principal)

 

ITHACA, N.Y. - Friends and family will gather to celebrate the life of Dr. Edward T. Green on Saturday, May 12 [2007]at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Grove Bible Church, Route 79, in Ithaca, N.Y. Dr. Green, 85, died on January 13, 2007, of complications from a fall. He had resided at Longview for over six years.

He was born in Oxford, N.J., on April 19, 1921. He was a graduate of Hackettstown (N.J.) High School, Ithaca College and Syracuse University. After serving three years during in World War II, he returned to a career in education. His professional career began in Palmyra, N.Y., and continued in several school districts in central New York. In 1977, Dr. Green moved to Statesboro to to serve as a professor at Georgia Southern College.

Over the next 23 years, he remained active in numerous educational and professional organizations. Ha was choir director and member of the First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed playing Golf, cultivating roses and collecting stamps.

Survivors include Margaret, his wife of 62 years, three daughters, Marsha (Jim) Whitehouse of Albion, Mich., Peg (Phil) Jablonski of Long Beach, Calif. and Barb (Joe) Hillebrandt of Ithaca, N.Y., N.Y.; 4 grandchildren, TJ and Jill Whitehouse and Jeffrey and Jenna Hillebrandt; and one brother, Gerald (Dorothy) Green of Unadilla, N.Y.

NEW BERLIN – There will be a memorial service for Edward T. Green at 11 a.m. May 12 in Bethel Grove Bible Church, Rt. 79, Ithaca. Dr. Green was a supervising principal at the New Berlin Central School from 1954-1958. He was also involved in the Rotary Club, Community Chorus, and American Legion.  He is survived by Margaret, his wife of 62 years, three daughters, four grandchildren, and a brother.

Hunt, Mildred (5th grade teacher)

August 4, 1909 - March 5, 2000

 

ONEONTA — Mildred (Beers) Hunt, loving mother, friend and teacher, passed away March 5 [2000] at Fox Nursing Home.  She was born Aug. 4, 1909, to Walter and Lucy Beers in Rathbone, where she spent her early childhood. Subsequently, the family moved to Sherburne, where Mildred attended school. In 1933, she graduated from Oneonta Normal School, thereafter beginning her career as a teacher.  Mildred taught fifth grade in New Berlin Central School for many years and was very popular with students and teachers alike. In 1936, she married a farmer, Adrian Hunt, and together they owned a recreation area known as Hunt's Pond, which included an 80-acre lake. Mildred operated a refreshment stand there summers when she wasn't teaching.  After her retirement in 1975, she did a lot of traveling worldwide. In later years, she spent winters in Florida. Her last home before Fox Nursing Home was in Barnes Trailer Park, Unadilla.  She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of New York State and the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta. She enjoyed cooking, reading and traveling. 

 

She was predeceased by her husband, Adrian, two sisters and a son.  She is survived by many special friends including Don and Janice (Johnson) Tuttle of Unadilla and Frank and June (Hazard) Weinheimer of Schenevus and the wonderful staff at Fox Nursing Home.  Funeral and committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2000, at The Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with the Rev. Gary W. Bonebrake, pastor of the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta, officiating.  Burial will be later in Riverside Cemetery, South New Berlin.  There will be no calling hours.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Main Street Baptist Church, Oneonta.  Funeral arrangements are by the Westcott Funeral Home, Unadilla.

Jacobsen, Clair William (6th grade teacher)

Clair W. Jacobsen

LAURENS — Clair William Jacobsen passed on from this world Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004.

He was born in Elm Grove on Oct. 8, 1930, the son of Bernhardt and Ruth (Gregory) Jacobsen. He grew up on the family farm, attended Morris Central School, Class of 1949, and was well-known as an outstanding athlete, especially in basketball and baseball. He graduated from Oneonta State Teachers College in 1953 and taught sixth grade at New Berlin Central School for 32 years, retiring in 1985.

Hard work was one of Clair's passions, as is evidenced by his many accomplishments, including the creation of Larchwood Lake, the rebuilding of Summit Lake Golf Course, the construction of six houses and most notably the development of Cee Jay Golf Course starting from scratch.

Throughout his life Clair enjoyed hunting, bowling, golf, gambling and horseshoes, at which he won several county fair titles.

Clair was a loving family man.

He is survived by his dear wife of 50 years, Lois (Roberts) Jacobsen; his son, Clair Steven Jacobsen and wife Jennifer; daughter, Susan Dugan and husband Andrew; son, Timothy Jacobsen and wife Diane; grandchildren, Alison, Cynthia, Eric, Ryan, Jason, Steven, Amanda and Melissa; sisters, Marion Dodge and Alma Pickens; brothers, Norman, and Karl and wife, Frances; sister-in-law, Louise Jacobsen; brother-in-law, Ken Walling; sister-in-law, Nora Pierce; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Frederic; a sister, Sandra Walling; and his brothers-in-law, John Dodge, Harry Pickens and Earl Roberts.

Clair will be deeply missed by his family and his many, many friends.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be held at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, with the Rev. Robert E. Witt Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Hillington Cemetery in Morris.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Clair's name may be made to the Morris Central School, care of Gary Jacobsen, Athletic Department, the Catskill Area Hospice or the charity of one's choice.

Clair was a rock, Godspeed.

Maloney, Martin J.

January 31, 1928 to August 31, 2006

 

NEW BERLIN – Martin (Marty) J. Maloney completed his journey of life on

August 31, 2006.

 

He was born on Jan. 31, 1928 in Hornell, the son of Thomas Francis and Helen (Ryan) Maloney; and was raised by his step-mother Winifred Frawley. Marty married Evelyn Sharo on Nov. 28, 1953. He was predeceased by his brothers William and Thomas Maloney, and his sister Mary Enouf.

 

Marty served in the Korean War, graduated from Buffalo State and Albright Art School, which began his career as an artist and educator. Beginning as an art teacher in New Berlin, Hayden-Winkleman School in Arizona, Superintendent of Mt Upton Central School, Deposit Central School, St. Mary’s in Keota, Iowa and also Holy Family in Norwich. Marty rounded off his career at BOCES in Chenango County.

 

Marty lived his life waiting to meet his Lord & Savior face to face. He was a devoted husband to his “girlfriend & sweetie,” Evie, and cherished his children and grandchildren.

 

Marty is survived by his wife of 53 years, Evie; his children and their spouses Thomas (Dawn) Maloney, Maureen (Daniel) Perry, Joann (Paul) Page, Gretchen (James) Matt, Martin Maloney and his fiancé Nicole, and Christopher (Christine) Maloney; and 17 grandchildren.

 

Funeral dervices will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 4 at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Edmeston with Father John Burns officiating. Calling hours will be one hour prior at the Church.

 

Interment will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Fairview Cemetery in New Berlin.

 

Contributions may be made in Marty’s memory to the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Edmeston.

Stowell, William R.

November 3, 1941 to March 23, 2018

 

William R Stowell, 76, of Deland, Florida and formerly of Morris, New York, passed away Friday, March 23rd at Florida Hospital Deland. William “Bill” Stowell was a veteran teacher and local Otsego County New York businessman. He taught at New Berlin Central School and was an owner of the Morris Auction Gallery based in Morris, New York. He was very active in his community and involved in many charitable groups. From his involvement in the Rotary Club of Morris, where he achieved the Paul Harris Award for volunteering time and energy, to the Grace and Grits events in Florida, to working to preserve historic buildings in Lane’s Cove, Massachusetts, where he spent most of his summer lobstering and fishing. As a teacher of over 30 years, Mr. Stowell influenced hundreds of lives and is remembered by many as a guiding force in their lives.
 

Bill is survived by his lovely wife of 45 years, Joan Stark Stowell of Deland, Florida and Gloucester, Massachusetts. He is also survived by his three sons and their families; John Stowell and his wife Meghan of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Richard Stowell and his wife Karen of Orlando, Florida and William “Chip” Stowell Jr. of Zephyrhills, Florida. Bill is also survived by his 4 grandchildren; Mackenzie and Richard “RJ” Stowell Jr. of Orlando and Harper and Hudson Stowell of Upper Marlboro. Many dear friends he considered family also survive him.
 

Born and raised in East Hampton, New York, the only son of Kenneth G. and

ileen (Fisher) Stowell, Bill settled in upstate New York after college. He and his wife, Joan, settled in Morris, New York and raised their family among the hills until 2005 when he and Joan relocated to Florida on their boat. Later they settled in Deland, Florida. While spending summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, Bill developed many close ties to the people and community and was a constant figure “In the cove”.
 

New York Services for William “Bill” Stowell, will be held June 2nd at 1:00PM at the Light Walkers Church, 193 Cnty Hwy 49, Morris, New York, with Rev. Gary Norman officiating. An open memorial reception party will be held at the The Grove of Butternut Valley next to the church.
 

Massachusetts services will be held in Gloucester June 9th at 2pm with a memorial at the Historic Fisherman’s Shack in Lanes Cove, followed by a flotilla ash spreading off Doughty (Sunset) point. All are welcome, and viewing can be from the rocks of Doughty (Sunset) Point.
